The Giver Post-Reading Assignment and Extra Credit Opportunity

6th Grade students:  You must complete one of the following assignments.  Extra Credit is optional.

Due Tuesday, October 15th (A) / Wednesday, October 16th (B)
Choose one of the following activities to complete now that we have finished reading The Giver.  You may start on this in class, but it is to be finished at home.

1.      Write an ending to the novel.  Lowry leaves us wondering what will happen to Jonas and Gabe.  What do you think will happen to them?  Write a two page (front and back if handwritten, two pages double-spaced if typed) or more ending to the novel.  Remember, you are continuing a story, so it should be in a story format, not just simply explained.
2.      Continue the story in the community.  When Jonas leaves the community, the reader also leaves and does not know what happens after he is gone.  Write a two page (front and back if handwritten, two pages double-spaced if typed) or more continuation of the community’s story.  You can write from the perspective of a character (besides Jonas), or you can write from a third person perspective (where we are outside of a character).  Think about how the community might react to Jonas’s absence, the release of the memories, and The Giver’s explanation (if he has one) for what happened.
3.      Write a prequel to the novel in at least two pages (front and back if handwritten, two pages double-spaced if typed).  In other words, how and when did this community form?  Who was responsible for starting it?  Remember, the community started many generations ago, so the characters we know would not be there.  Create your own characters that would have been part of the first generation of the community.
Extra Credit
Also due Tuesday, October 15th (A) and Wednesday, October 16th (B)
Complete the following extra credit separately from the above assignment for up to 50 points extra credit to be added into the gradebook where you need points.  For example, the summer reading assignment was worth 120 points.  If your original score was 70/120, I would put your 50 extra credit points into your score to make it 120/120.  If you did not do the assignment and have a 0, you would now have a 50/120.  If you are not missing any points, you will not receive extra credit in an assignment, or on top of your grade.

Draw and label a map of the community where The Giver takes place.  You should use your knowledge of the layout from the novel (for example, we know that the Annex is behind the House of the Old) to draw your map.  I will not give credit for hastily done pencil sketches.  I will give credit for a drawing that shows effort and that time was spent perfecting it.  You may use pencil, but you should also add color to distinguish between features.  Make sure you label what everything is (Jonas’s dwelling, the auditorium, etc.).
